Relatieplanet International – Freelance Proofreading Scam?

About a month ago (May 8 to be exact), I applied for a position as a proofreader for Relatieplanet International.  This was the job ad that caught my attention:

Of course, I researched the company.  No one had anything negative to say about them.  Everything seemed legit.

After sending my resume and three references, I was hired.   I had to sign a contract stating that I would put forth the amount of effort required to complete the tasks and that I would receive payment after 21 days of work.  I was getting paid $5 per edited kb, which was around $20 an hour for me.  Of course, that was a red flag.  How could they pay me so much?

How I Got the Gig: Jack-O-Lantern Farm Brochure

A few months ago, one of my professors mentioned that a local business owner needed a brochure made for his company.  I approached her after class, and she set me up with the Mr. Larry Carpenter, owner of Jack-O-Lantern Farm in Muscle Shoals, AL.  After a quick visit to the farm, I started working on the brochure.  This is the brochure I made for him:

I’m very happy with it, and so is Mr. Carpenter.  In fact, he told me that he is going to recommend me to other local vendors.  In a few minutes, I’m going to start designing a business card for myself and drop those by the farm on my way to Florence on Monday.  It is so exciting to have finally reached a point in my life where I need a business card.  I didn’t think that would happen so soon after graduation, yet here it is!

How I Got the Gig: Writing for EscapeWizard.com & WhatsCheaper.com

If you have visited my Freelance Writing Samples page, you will know that I write for two travel sites (EscapeWizard.com and WhatsCheaper.com).  I thought I would take a moment to explain how I got the gig and how you can find one, too.

In February, I left the nest and moved into an apartment.  I had more free time and I decided to pick up a few freelance gigs.  I started checking the classifieds in the local papers.  I also checked job sites like Monster.com and SnagAJob.com, but I didn’t find a single hit.
